Celebrating the contribution of the evergreen romantic star of Hindi Cinema, Dev Anand on his 97th Birth Anniversary

One of the finest actors of all time, Dev Anand was born as Dharamdev Pishorimal Anand on 26th September 1923 at Gurdaspur district in Punjab. He contributed to Indian cinema as an actor, writer, director and producer. Dev Sahab’s career in Bollywood lasted a long six decades.

Young Dev Anand completed his BA degree in English Literature for the Government College, Lahore and then left for Bombay in the early 1940’s. He served as a clerk in an accounting firm for a salary of Rs 65. Later, he accompanied his brother Chetan to become a member of the Indian People’s Theatre Association. During his early days, Dev Anand was greatly inspired by actor Ashok Kumar’s performance in the films Achhut Kanya and Kismet. Babu Rao Pai saw young Dev Anand and was pleased by his charm. He was soon offered a lead role in Prabhat Films Hum Ek Hain in the year 1946 opposite Kamala Kotnis and during the shoot, he befriended Guru Dutt

In the late 1940s, Dev Anand was paired opposite singer-actress Suraiya and both of them went on to do seven films together namely Vidya, Jeet, Shair, Afsar, Nili, Do Sitare and Sanam between 1948-51. Their chemistry was adored by the audience, and all these films were hits.

However, the first big break of Dev Anand’s career was given by Ashok Kumar when he picked him up as a hero for the Bombay Talkies production Ziddi opposite Kamini Kaushal. This film was a huge success. Ziddi also became the first film to have a Kishore-Lata duet “Ye Kaun Aaya Karke Yeh Sola Singhar.” The song was also a massive hit proved and to be the starting point of Dev Anand’s association with Kishore Kumar’s voice. This collaboration was sparked with the song “Marne ki Duayen” pictured on Dev Anand in the movie Ziddi.

The movie Baazi directed by Guru Dutt, starring Dev Anand, Geeta Bali and Kalapana Kartik was a trendsetter for urban crime films in the 1960s. Dev Anand’s romantic pairing with Kalpana Karthik gained popularity and the duo ended up signing hit films like Aandhiya, Taxi Driver, House No 44 and Nau Do Gyarah.

Dev Sahab’s rapid dialogue delivery and his nodding while speaking became a sign of recognition for the star. It was the 1960’s when Dev Anand acquired the image of a romantic hero with films such as Manzil, Tere Ghar Ke Samne, Asli Naqli, Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai, Mahal and Teen Deviyaan. One of his best films from the 1960s was Hum Dono in which he was a producer and also an actor.

Through Dev Sahab’s career, some really beautiful old songs were picturised on him which are considered iconic. Songs like Yeh Dil Na Hota Bechara, Khoya Khoya Chand, Dil Pukare Aa Re and Chhod Do feel fresh even today. But with these songs, the romantic gestures of Dev Anand have also lived in the memories of the audience.
