A Happy 54th Birthday to the “Dhak Dhak girl of Bollywood” Madhuri Dixit Nene



Madhuri Dixit, born on 15th May 1967 in a Marathi Kokanashta Brahmin family in Bombay, was the youngest of all her siblings. Her interest in dancing began from the age of three and she went on to train Kathak for eight straight years. At 9, young Madhuri even won a scholarship as a Kathak dancer and later on became a professional Kathak dancer.

Madhuri Dixit entered the world of cinema in the year 1984 with the movie Abodh opposite Bengali actor, Tapas Paul under the banner of Rajshri Productions. The film failed commercially but Madhuri’s performance was positively reviewed by critics. Most of her initial films like Awara baap, Swati, Manav Hatya, Hifazat and Uttar Dakshin did not shine on the silver screen. It was the year 1988 where Madhuri Dixit turned into a superstar with her performance in N’Chandra’s action-romance Tezaab opposite Anil Kapoor. She also earned her first nomination for the Filmfare Best Actress Award.

The very next year, the on-screen chemistry of Madhuri Dixit and Anil Kapoor sparkled in Subhash Ghai’s Ram Lakhan which emerged as a super hit. Songs from this movie like “Bada Dukh Dina O Ramji” and “My Name Is Lakhan” became chartbusters too. After this, the actress started featuring in one hit after the other like Prem Pratigyaa opposite the star Mithun Chakraborthy and Tridev with an ensemble cast of Sunny Deol, Naseeruddin Shah, Jackie Shroff, Sangeeta Bijlani, Sonam and Amrish Puri. Parinda co-starring Anil Kapoor was listed in CNN News18’s list of “100 greatest Indian films of all time.”

Madhuri Dixit’s expressive performances in her movies and her dance sequences gave her the title of the “Dancing Queen of Bollywood”. During the ’90s, Madhuri Dixit was a megastar already and became the most loved diva of the industry. In 1990, Dixit appeared in nine films out of which five were commercially unsuccessful. But she also delivered some super hits like Kishen Kanhaiya, DIl and Thanedaar. In 1991, Madhuri Dixit featured in superhits like Saajan and Prahaar. The film Beta from the year 1992 was the biggest hit of the year and gave Madhuri Dixit the most loved title of “ Dhak Dhak Girl”.

After all her hits, the biggest highlight of Madhuri Dixit’s career is said to be “Hum Apke Hai Kaun” opposite Salman Khan. This film became the highest-grossing Bollywood film in Hindi cinema history and made Rs 1.3 Billion worldwide. The songs featuring Madhuri Dixit from the film like, “Didi Tera Devar Deewana”, “Mausam Ka Jaadu”, “Wah Wah Ramji”, “Pehla Pehla Pyaar Hai”, “Dhiktana” and “Maye Ni Maye” are loved even today.

Throughout her career, Madhuri Dixit now Madhuri Dixit Nene gave cinema lovers many unforgettable performances with movies like Lajja, Hum Tumahe hai Sanam, Wajood, Pukar, Devdas, Aaja Nachle, Dedh Ishqiya and Gulaab Gang. She also worked in recent films like Total Dhamaal where her comic timing was enjoyed a lot by the audience.
